From Populorum Progressio to Caritas in Veritate Continuity and Progress
Main Article Content
Abstract
“Caritas in veritate” is already the third papal document on the development of the peoples, published on the fortieth anniversary of the first one, Paul VI’s encyclical “Populorum progressio”. Between the two of them there is a continuity in many aspects, which is not broken by the “Sollicitudo rei socialis” of John Paul II. But Benedict XVI not only has intended to use this date (four decades) to commemorate the encyclical of Paul VI: he has made his own reading of that text, and has introduced some key points which enrich the former approaches regarding the development of the peoples, and of the Social Teaching of the Church in its entirety. From the point of view of theology and anthropology, the present Pope offers not a few suggestions to insist on the development of the peoples in our globalized world.
