Abstract

The Editorial Board of the Journal of Social Development offers a reflection on the leadership of the University as an institution and the role it plays in the formation of leaders. Starting with a critical eye over conventional definitions of leadership, characteristics of Ignatian leadership enunciated as we write from an institution inspired by the Society of Jesus, then the distinction between mission and functions of the university is established and listed opportunities and threats for the university leadership involves establishing the European Higher Education Area. In the second part of the editorial is analyzed, first, the role of the university as forming social leaders and, secondly, the role of the university as an institutional leader in the context of today's society. This is only possible if the members of the university community share this mission.
