Public theology: a proposal to speak theologically about social issues in the pluralist spanish society

Abstract

This article would like to introduce a new element into the Spanish theological context interested in the social implications of theology: the philosophical trend denominated as public theology that developed in the U.S. in the 70’s. Our article presents, first of all, the origins and development of this philosophy, especially emphasizing the theological method elaborated by the theologian David Tracy and related to this philosophical trend. Secondly, the article suggests the conditions that would have to be taken into account in order to be able to develop a public theology in Spain, as well as the challenges involved in the current debate on social discourse in the Spanish Church.
