Abstract

UNIJES proposes four final steps for teaching and research activity in university Centres under the auspices of the Company of Jesus: la utilitas, la iustitia, la humanitas y la fides. The presentation deals with the manner in which an ever increasingly plural teaching staff, including both believers and nonbelievers, can really help students to develop la fides. A possible solution is to adopt an ethics that, for its rational basis, can be acceptable to everyone. But this solution is not as easy or as satisfactory as it seems at first sight. The author proposes an anthropology that recognizes that the human spirit is characterized by its ability to opt just as reasonably in favour of transcendence as against it. But in both cases the human spirit has a spiritual dimension that can be cultivated from within. All believers and nonbelievers can help to develop the human spirit in students and thus help them develop their human worth through different options, chosen maturely, relating to transcendence.
