Secularism after Sarkozy

Abstract

An article centred on the French debate on secularism, a debate maintained above all by left–wing intellectuals. It declares that after being elected President of the Republic, Sarkozy has given a new slant to the question; for example, in an interesting text he covers religious reality, secularism and Islam. The author indicates that for Sarkozy the integration of Muslims is an obsession, supporting the prohibition of the veil and opposing the mention of God and Christian values in the European text. His contacts with Saudi Arabia and the Vatican are mentioned and especially his Letran speech, which we also include in this number. His declaration that the roots of France are Christian is underlined, as well as the defence of secularism as a guarantee for political independence and collaboration between religious and non–religious traditions. The final part reflects the criticism by secularists and left–wing Catholics towards Sarkozy’s project, with special reference to the expression “positive secularism”; his convergence with the ideas of Benedict XVI are also mentioned, declaring that they represent a break–away from how the French paradigm appears in the 1905 Law.
