Mission of a Jesuit University: challenges and guidelines for the future
Main Article Content
Abstract
This text consists of basically an analysis of Father Peter Hans Kolvenbach’s thoughts, to date Superior General of the Society of Jesus who has developed a rich reflection on the mission of Jesuit Universities. It is an adapted version of the talk given by the author at the IX Conference “Formation for Mission” organised by UNIJES and held in Loyola from 5th to 9th of November 2007. With the form of nine theses, he proposes a reflection on a) the mission of the Society of Jesus, that is not different from that of the Church itself; b) the specific mission of Jesuit Universities, in which definition, the noun (“University”) and the adjective (“Jesuit”) should be dialectically taken into account at the same time. He supports Kolvenbach’s idea that the ideal of Jesuit education for more than four centuries, will, in the future, be a competent, conscious person, capable of compassion and well educated in solidarity.
