Towards a philosophical criticism of economicism

Abstract

Absolutism in methodology of economic sciences leads to the consideration of liberal economic theory as an axiologically neutral thought, lacking in anthropological or axiological assumptions of any kind. The author presents a philosophical criticism of liberal economics in its three stages: classical theory of economics, first neoclassical theory and today’s neoclassical economy. This criticism stems from reflection on ethical rationality (Frankfurt school) and the economicism thesis. The two decisive elements are to make it clear that the laws of economics are not unchangeable (economic determinism) and that ethical reason and economic rationality are two completely different and irreconcilable realities. It is at the point where freedom is confused with free trade exchange that certain manifestations of economicism appear.
