Abstract

As its title reflects, this editorial takes a look at the third age, from the point of view of the opportunities and challenges that this third stage of our lives represents in our societies. These societies are witnessing an aging population of unprecedented dimensions. After some general considerations on the phenomenon of aging and on the circumstances that can turn it into a real problem, certain considerations are proposed with respect to the responsibility that family, State and social institutions each have in to trying to deal with the problem. From an ethical stance, we endeavour to contribute elements that answer the question: What can and should be done by each body in their specific field? But the elderly not only have their rights, they also have obligations, and can make substantial contributions to society. After all is said and done, old age is also an opportunity.
