Socioeconomic development of Latin America and the Caribbean under the multi-export model

Abstract
This article is based on the distinction between a ‘structural-historical model’ (in force for so long) and a ‘development model’ (through which the transition is made from one kind of structural model to another). The author first offers a summary of the history of how socioeconomic Latin American systems work, and the characteristics of these models are presented in a vivid analytical figure. Then the characteristics of these models at the present moment are analysed, with an explanation of the main features of the so-called multi-export model, currently in effect in the region. This is followed by some brief and stimulating ideas on the way development in Latin America and the Caribbean should take place and on the role of international co-operation here.
