Abstract

The growing presence of women on the labour market can be considered as one of the more stable indicators of advanced societies in the last quarter of the XX century. The labour activity rate of Spanish women is one of the lowest in Europe, but it has also undergone the same growth rate. After analysing some of the causes of the growing presence of women on the labour market, this study considers one of the consequences, which has directed family concerns and policies in recent years: problems in reconciliation of family life and professional life. In the light of this picture, the notable role of local public policies in reconciliation goals is analysed. However, this paper emphasizes that fact that solidarity with one part of the population – women – is not enough. Reconciliation involves important cultural transformations. But, above all, reconciliation is an investment in local economic development. It is in this aspect that the study observes the relationship between certain socioeconomic indicators put into practice in fifty Spanish towns with a population of 100.000 or over.
