Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper presents the results of a poll directed to all women elected in the 1995 regional and local elections in the Canary Islands. The questionnaire took into account variables related to the political and sociological profile of the elected women and to prospective aspects of the study. Attaining a response quote of 45.1%, the results reflect a relatively young female political class, well integrated in the labour market with professional jobs, middle–high income, and a very high educational level. They are mainly at the beginning of their political careers, with no previous electoral experience, and joined their parties less than 7 years before being elected and show high motivation. Marriage and children seem not to be a major problem for their political careers.
