Abstract

Micro–credits have become the main source of regular income for thousands of small businesses that operate outside the range of official frameworks, and which represent the only possibility of welfare for a large part of the population in underdeveloped countries. Obtaining financial backing from the official bank is so difficult that there is an urgent need to arrange financial systems adapted to their specific cases. The author emphasises the quantitative importance of these micro–businesses, classified in the so–called informal sector, as well as their role in the battle against poverty, being the only means of subsistence for thousands of families. In this article the main characteristics of this type of financial backing are analysed, as are the institutions that provide it, and a series of recommendations are made as regards concession and its conditions. The suggestion is put forward that systems for saving should be provided together with those of credits and the role of women as the main recipients of this type of financing is stressed.
