Abstract

Society’s consideration of the elderly has kept evolving throughout different historical periods. Today, there are more and more older people who feel that the arrival of retirement does not mean the end of life, but the start of a new and active period, in many cases more rewarding, which opens up new possibilities for contact with society and with those of us who belong to it.

In this review a path of social consideration of the elderly is described, and life experiences and stories are told about the different types of social and humanitarian services that these elderly people give, which can help us value the breadth of this phenomenon that seems to be growing. Perhaps then it will be a different world and, in it we will be able to build the society for everyone that we clamour for with warmth and generosity.
