Abstract

In the General Elections recently held in Nicaragua, the victory went to the Liberal Party candidate Enrique Bolaños. In this context, shortly before the elections, in September 2001, a book was presented in Managua: “Bases para un plan de desarrollo rural de Nicaragua” (Basis for a Rural Development Plan for Nicaragua), edited by the UCA (University of Central America) of Managua with the support of the Spanish Agency for International Co-operation (Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional). This study represents one of the results of a long process of reflection and debate, called “Initiative for Rural Development in Nicaragua” (Iniciativa para el desarrollo rural de Nicaragua) in which, together with others, a team from ETEA has actively participated. A summary of the book and the process itself follows. In the text the whole process is explained in detail, its aims and its participants, the birth of the longest document which is summarised here, and the work still pending, with our sights placed on improving living conditions for the people of this Central American country we feel so close to for so many reasons.
