The Resistance of Craftwork in a Globalocal Context: Artistic Weaving in San Jacinto, Bolívar (Colombia)

Abstract
This article deals with the intrinsic mechanisms of craftwork that are of benefit to its resistance in a globalocal context. In the field of crafts, tensions coexist between the tendency towards commercializing cultural products, as promoted by international governmental norms and legal frameworks, and the skillful solutions of craftwork itself, in order to meet needs that are other than monetary by nature. Using the case of artisan weaving in San Jacinto, Bolívar (Colombia), this article identifies actions that seek to nourish and strengthen spiritual and social practices, as well as the artistic creation of a group of women weavers, who continually rediscover their way of relating to the world in their craftwork. The data that supports this study comes from ethnographic fieldwork undertaken between 2016 and 2021. Among the findings, mechanisms are identified that make the textile–based art of San Jacinto possible, as well as its significance for those who carry out this work, and the strategies employed to sidestep its commodification.
