Work in the Cameroonian real world
Main Article Content
Abstract
The aim of this article is to highlight the two sides of the concept of work, which is multidimensional in reality and in Cameroon in particular. This Central African country, with a population of almost 30 million, is often described as ‘Africa in miniature’ due to its geographical location, its terrain, its climate and, above all, its ethnic mosaic, which is unevenly distributed across the national territory. Following independence in 1960, the country became a republic with constitutional and state structures designed to ensure that government policy was applied to clearly identified sectors, such as labour, which led to the division of the country into rural and urban zones. To speak of work in the Cameroonian context is, in reality, to ask whether it is a source of development or of enslavement for the working population, or whether it truly promotes human well-being. What emerges is that Cameroonians see work as more than just a means of earning money; it is also a factor in socialisation. From there, work becomes working with others and caring for them.
