Abstract

This article completes another one that was published in 2011 in ATG about the Basque and Spanish languages in St. Ignatius of Loyola. It begins by presenting St. Francis Xavier’s ease for languages. In addition to his fluency in various European languages, especially Portuguese, he learned Oriental languages needed for evangelization: Portuguese Creole of India, Tamil, Malay and Japanese. Spanish, his preeminent language is duly regarded since it was the language spoken in his family’s castle and in the region of his birthplace Navarre, which had direct contact with Aragon. Then, the question of whether he knew Basque is analyzed, a debate presented by different authors. It ends considering the saint’s Navarre ethnicity.
