Act and Potency in Suarezian Metaphysics

Abstract

Doctor Eximius accepts and defends the division of the being into act and potency, taking it as a crucial element of the creature and its development. However, opposing Cajetanism, Suárez rejects linking this division with the real distinction between essence and existence, highlighting its dependence on the first predicate of all created entities: being by participation. Also, despite the opinion of many scholars, Suárez does not identify potency and act with nothingness and existence, nor with possible and real, but with contingent and perfect. This division shows our distance from the Being by essence and justifies a priori some fundamental concepts, such as the mutability of the created being, its progressive perfection and its absolute dependence. Thus, we can assert that act and potency are privileged in Suarezian metaphysics, as they explain the nature of creatures and their changes.
