Community and the Highest Good in Kant A Theological and Secular Approach

Abstract
The community is the context in which human beings develop their lives. Thus, it has a prominent role in Immanuel Kant’s moral proposal. In Religion within the Limits of Reason Alone, it is pointed out that there is an ethical and a political community between which no more than an analogy exists. In this paper, I hold that although Kant referred to an analogy, the two communities are conceptually linked more deeply in his broad philosophical system. First, they are connected through the ideas of freedom, sociability, and institutionalism, which gives rise to a complementary connection between both communities. Second, and more significantly, the two communities have a common end, namely, the highest good or end of ends, having this a theological and secular character. It is, therefore, argued that the highest good is the most important binding element that connects both communities.
