Bending the Knee to Baal? St. Ignatius on Jesuit Vocation Promotion

Abstract
Since the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), Jesuits largely have been reluctant to engage in proactive vocation promotion for the Society of Jesus, despite an extraordinary decrease in the number of its members, on the grounds that such recruitment is contrary to the values of Ignatius of Loyola. In reality, however, early Jesuits engaged in deliberate and coordinated efforts to recruit men, and they understood these efforts to be illustrative of the distinctive spirituality of the Society
