Luther's reasons about faith and works and "the reason of unreason"

Abstract

Taking inspiration from an intuition of Hans Urs von Balthasar that finds a certain resemblance between Luther and Cervantes about the question of faith and works, the article is in the first place concerned with pelagianism as something both old and contemporary, and it stresses with Louis Bouyer the importance of the forgotten Second Council of Orange that addressed the matter of semi-pelagianism. The issue leads to remembering the justified insistence of the German Reformer on the Pauline view on the primacy of grace, and the lack of proportion that darkens his contribution. Soon thereafter we are led into Don Quixote de la Mancha´s senselessness, taken as a poetic figure that shares a similar insistence, yet being this insistence more balanced.
