The Relative God A Reading of Bloch and Gesché
Main Article Content
Abstract
In this paper we compare the positions of two 20th century intellectuals, the Marxist philosopher Ernst Bloch and the Catholic theologian Adolphe Gesché, on the question of atheism. Both identify that Christianity carries atheism implicitly within it. Both argue that there is a minimisation of any religious system or image of God that does not respect the freedom of the human being. After comparing both stances and discovering the importance of distinguishing, in the core of the Christian message and the Bible, the liberating trend from manipulation by those in power (“the God of the rulers”), we will carry out an analysis of the challenges and opportunities for 21st century Christianity.
