The Suarezian ontology of contingency
Main Article Content
Abstract
The theologian, jurist and philosopher Francisco Suarez (1548-1617) outlines a rigorous ontology of contingency in the ‘Metaphysical Disputations’, his fundamental work in metaphysics. The modernity of Suarezian treatment of continget being is often unnoticed under the clothing of its Scholastic language. This paper offers a reading of some relevant passages where the analysis of finite contingent being arises in that text, in order to point out its importance as an interpretative clue of the author’s thinking and his influence in the development of modern philosophy. An appendix is included on the ‘24 Thomist and Suarezian theses’.
