Abstract

Old age (Third Age), represents a sector of the population each time wider in our Western societies. On the other hand, the prevailing social dynamics, may easily lead to its marginalization, or, at least, to the devaluation of this stage of the vital cycle. The danger is that this state of things may hinder our becoming aware of the possibilities and opportunities that this period of life offers. It is a stage in which, through the compulsory mournings and through a particular tendency to the interiorization, one may reach to a perfect integration of the personality. From it, and with a greater awareness of the nearness of death, a unique fullness of life becomes possible, and one “conjecturing of the essential” in what we might call a mystic experience.
