Main Article Content
Abstract
Between July 1936 and August 1937, there was a complex process of building the consensus of the Francoist State. A large part of international public opinion participated in that process. The position of the Cardinal of Tarragona, Vidal i Barraquer, represented a clear limit to this consensus, as it marked a distance from the passive consensus and later was a sign of a real Catholic dissent. Majority or general consensus was not possible. Neither was any dissent. The position adopted by some Catholic intellectuals reinforced the legitimacy of increasingly broad limits. What meaning and what consequences did this critical ecclesiastical position have?
