Abstract

Today's society is witnessing a new proliferation of the religious that has shattered predictions of the end of religion. The question of God remains, at least as the last instance to which to appeal in the face of the end of the great utopias. A paradigmatic case of this attitude is found in Horkheimer, who, from his concrete coordinates, gives religion the floor to speak in the face of the arrival of the administered society. Religious traditions can draw attention to the excesses and shortcomings of a functionalist and instrumental society that has obviated the human being's search for meaning and has mutilated his communitarian being, his compassion, his hope and his illusion. This article presents Horkheimer's assessment of religion in its last stage, where he found the possible transcendent meaning for the whole of human history and its victims.
