Abstract

The current debate in our country on the problem of secularism is too much evidence of two extremes that are difficult to reconcile: secularism as ideology and confessionalism as nostalgia. However, if one analyses both with serenity, one is surprised to find that their theoretical assumptions are identical. If secularism tends to emphasise the destructive character of religion for the construction of a modern and free society, confessionalism highlights the dangers of a discourse based exclusively on a sacralised reason. The author of this article tries to expose the theoretical assumptions of both positions, to point out their limits and to point out possible ways of meeting where faith and reason, healed in humility, can be free of reciprocal suspicions.
