Church-Government Tensions: The Present Situation in Historical Perspective
Main Article Content
Abstract
The last months of 2004 have seen a series of conflicts between the Church and the Spanish government. In the face of some simplistic interpretations and positions, it is necessary to review history in order to understand how relations between the State and the Church have taken shape, and what the current situation is on this issue. It is necessary to maintain serenity at a time of tension, in order to be able to offer a series of clues that can help in difficult moments. The assessment that not everything is a conflict between church and state, the need for dialogue, the awareness that the issue cannot be solved with simplistic recipes and the moral issues involved in the whole debate are necessary conditions for an adequate response on the part of the believer.
