Abstract

Faced with the problem that has arisen in Spanish society regarding the teaching of religion in schools, it is necessary to realise that the discussion is centred on the "how" of the teaching of religion and not on the presence or absence of religion in schools. In order to consider this "how", it is necessary to take into account the extent to which the teaching of religion has influenced the Christian education of pupils. The data provided clearly show that the religious value is in a very weak situation; moreover, it does not seem that the teaching of religion at school has helped pupils to identify more closely with the Christian message, and even less with the ecclesial institution that carries it. The teaching of religion in school, which should continue, should emphasise the strong point of religion: the value of the message centred on love; it should strengthen the weak point of the mediators, by teaching the importance of the Hierarchy from the point of view of faith, as well as by criticising actions and activities which are not in accordance with Gospel values.
