Abstract
A healthy concern at its root arises in the soul of every Christian in the face of the overwhelming number of those who are ignorant of Christianity. If we look at the world picture, it offers us an impressive array of peoples who live with their backs turned to even elementary religious truth. And if we weigh the problem in all its acuteness, we are confronted with a disconcerting reality. Is the majority of humanity condemned to hell? For the Church tells us that a knowledge of God through nature is not enough to attain salvation, but that it is absolutely necessary, as the Apostle declares, an act of faith in God, i.e. the acceptance of a divine testimony, of a revelation. At first sight, the summand of salvation has a positive part in the field of truth. But the truth - the truth alone - is in Christianity, so what about the innumerable heathen peoples? Here is the terrible problem.
