Abstract

The conviction that the biblical Flood was a historical event has been deeply rooted for millennia. It even persists to this day. From the scientific point of view, the Flood was a theological-scientific solution to the evidence that living things have become extinct forever throughout geological time. The non-Diluvist "scientific" approach to the extinction of species without religious pretensions was not established until the times of Buffon and Cuvier, in the mid-18th and early 19th centuries. This paper has chosen to differentiate several "phases" in the development of ideas about extinction, typified under the concept of paradigms, and presents the historical development of scientific ideas about the Flood as a scientific-theological explanation to the problem of the extinction of species and the crisis of the Flood paradigm with Buffon, Cuvier and Darwin.
