Abstract

On the occasion of the two hundred years of the “reinvention” of the word “biology” and the two hundred years of the publication of Recherches sur l'organization des corps vivants, this work remembers the work and scientific, philosophical and theological ideas of John Baptist de Lamarck (1744-1829). Lamarckian ideas were obscured by Darwin's, but in his time they helped develop a non-religious but respectful, more autonomous, rational and dynamic image of nature. What remains of Lamarck and Lamarckism two centuries later? What were his contributions to scientific thought and what implications did his biological philosophy have on the conception of the world?
