Sigmund Freud and Oskar Pfister: The story of a friendship and its theological significance
Main Article Content
Abstract
Oskar Pfister is little known in Spanish psychoanalytic and theological circles. However, this Swiss pastor and theologian has the honor of being a pioneer in the application of psychoanalysis to education and pastoral work. His long relationship and friendship with Freud also gives us the opportunity to witness the beginnings of a dialogue between psychoanalysis and faith that continues to this day. Freud's work, “The Future of an Illusion,” was answered by “The Illusion of a Future,” in which the Swiss pastor boldly responds to and criticizes the theses of his friend and mentor, Freud. Since then, much has been debated, reflected upon, and elaborated upon, both in the field of psychoanalysis and in that of faith. Establishing the space from which this necessary and difficult dialogue can continue today is the primary objective of this work.
