Abstract

We offer the Spanish translation of a classic text on spirituality from the Middle Ages. The letter deals with the structure of the contemplative life. Using the image of a ladder, it represents the entire spiritual life from its very beginnings to contemplative union with God. The stages of this ascent towards God are formed by the four rungs of the ladder: reading, meditation, prayer, contemplation. The order, succession, and dependence of some rungs on others show a well-constructed, structured, and thoughtful work. More than one reader will identify these rungs with the current practice of lectio divina.
