Abstract

The cancellation or forgiveness of Third World countries' foreign debt is the subject of an international campaign supported by many Christian church organizations, following the suggestion of John Paul II in his encyclical on the third millennium. In addition to signing up to the campaign, it is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the problem: to understand its origins, the consequences it has had on the poorest populations of indebted countries, the solutions proposed by various institutions, etc. All of this will help to open our eyes to a reality that cannot be dismissed as a technical problem that is beyond our control, because it has ethical implications that, as believers and as citizens of the rich world, we cannot ignore.
