Ignatius of Loyola and women
Main Article Content
Abstract
The author aims to place the historical relationship between Ignatius of Loyola and the early Society of Jesus with women in terms that, according to current data, seem most appropriate, far removed from the myth of misogyny with which the founder of this religious order has long been branded. These pages trace the various stages of his life and the role played in them by female figures such as Inés Pascual, Gerónima Claver, Isabel Roser, Juana de Aragón, Duchess of Tagliacozzo, considered the most beautiful woman of the Renaissance, Vittoria Colonna, Marquise of Pescara, the natural daughter of Charles V, Margaret of Austria, and the daughter of Charles V and Elizabeth of Portugal, the Infanta Joanna of Austria, who became a Jesuit. The works carried out by Saint Ignatius and the fledgling Society in favour of marginalised women are also recounted.
