Homo sacramentalis The social relevance of belonging to sacramental brotherhoods

Abstract
During the Early Modern Age, lay brotherhoods proliferated in Granada. They were introduced after the conquest of the city and faithfully represented the spirituality of the Old Christians. Among the first brotherhoods to emerge were the sacramental ones. They were established in all the city's parishes, and in many of them, the so-called esclavitudes appeared later, also with a predominantly sacramental character. These sacramental associations were given preference over the others brotherhoods and enjoyed various spiritual, economic and social privileges. The sacramental brotherhoods were aware of this superiority, exploited it, and considered the social prestige derived from this intermediate power.
