On a Symbolic Ecclesiology

Abstract

It is now widely accepted in both biblical exegesis and systematic Christology that the focus of Jesus’ preaching was not the church, but the kingdom of God. What is the relationship between the kingdom that Jesus proclaimed and the church that has emerged? Is Loisy’s famous statement—“Jesus preached the kingdom, and the church came”—acceptable? Throughout church history, various positions have emerged regarding the relationship between the church and the kingdom.
