Ethical, Social, and Law Implications of the “Human Genome” Project

Abstract

Once again, culture, society, and ethical and legal discourse are feeling the impact of significant scientific and technological advances. It seems clear that outdated distinctions such as the humanities and the natural sciences do little to help in taking a position in a debate that is necessarily interdisciplinary, as required by the “Human Genome Project.” The most important challenge regarding the HGP is to disseminate, at all levels, the basic technical information and the ethical, philosophical, or social criteria essential for citizens to form a personal, autonomous, and responsible position.
