Abstract

A series of historical testimonies regarding the ancient institution of deaconesses are gathered. A general desire has arisen within the Church to grant women the specific role and responsibilities that correspond to them in ecclesial tasks. By closing the doors to their access to the priesthood, the demand to open the path toward the female diaconate emerges with greater strength.
