Abstract

This study comprehensively maps the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) that have emerged over the last 30 years in defence of LGTBIQ+ rights in Senegal. These entities play a crucial role in providing support, raising awareness and advocating for legislative changes. However, the current situation of LGTBIQ+ people is characterised by persistent episodes of discrimination and violence. Rooted in cultural and religious norms, Senegalese society reflects a conserv-ative attitude, considering homosexuality as a taboo. Despite the ratification of international human rights instruments, current legislation criminalises same-sex relations, and a lack of political will hinders reforms. Although progress has been made, the study highlights that CSOs are a key instrument to push for profound changes and foster equality and acceptance of the LGTBIQ+ community.
