The care economy and its effects on Central American women’s economic, physical and political autonomy

Abstract
The care economy is a prevalent gender issue in all Central American coun-tries. The unequal distribution of domestic and care work prevents women from entering, remaining and progressing in the labour market, and means that women are less able to participate in the civic and political life of their countries. In extreme cases, and as a result of the economic dependence of women who cannot work because of these tasks, some are forced to remain in situations of domestic violence and abuse. All of these significantly limit women’s economic, political and physical autonomy. This paper analyses the effects of these problems, as well as how they are addressed in gender equality and equity policies in the region.
