Abstract

In The Sickness unto Death, Kierkegaard analyzes despair as one of the keys in anthropology. Since despair is an essential part of human existence, his analysis will let us understand in a new way other fundamental notions such as synthesis, becoming, sin, faith, etc. Now, is despair, as a sickness proper to spirit, an asset or a shortcoming? This is the question the author of the present paper intends to elucidate starting from the path man has to cover during his existence, according to the Danish philosopher, in order to become oneself, concluding that this path only leads to oneself when man freely resolves upon resting on the Power which grounds him.
