"Your eyes saw my embryo" Note on the translation of verse 16 of psalm 139
Main Article Content
Abstract
‘Man from the womb belongs to God who scrutinises and knows everything, who forms him and shapes him with his hands, who sees him while he is still a small formless embryo and who glimpses in him the adult of tomorrow, whose vocation is already written in the book of life’. These words of John Paul II illuminate Professor Núñez de Castro's study of the translations of verse 16 of Psalm 139, which heads numbers 58-63 of the Encyclical Evangelium vitae, in which abortion is condemned. Given that in the different translations that we usually use there are nuances and differences, it is interesting to consider them in order to be able to understand and assume with greater knowledge of the question the magisterium of John Paul II on this decisive issue.
